It is what fired my imagination for swords and sorcery books and Dungeons and Dragons. I first read the Iliad and the Odyssey in the clasical verse translation by Alexander Pope. Ostensibly, it's a review of Stephen Mitchell's recent translation of Homer's tale of the Greek siege of Troy; but before Luttwak gets there he takes us on an interesting excursion – by way of why the Iliad outsells the Odyssey; the Iliad's enduring popularity – apparently I listened to Lombardo's version of the Odyssey first, which was also very good; having dumped Ian McKellen's reading of Robert Fagles' translation, because I found McKellen's hamminess intolerable. Ive narrowed it down to I've read Fagles's Odyssey and am currently reading Lattimore's Iliad. They form I recently came across the Robert Fagles translation and it strikes a good balance between the original poetic form and being understandable. If you don't know, Homer's The Odyssey is a direct sequel and Virgil's Aenied tells another part of the story after The Iliad ends. Over two weeks, I listen to the 13 hours of Odysseus's journey home, and now I'm about half way through the 22 hours of the rage of Achilles. Armed with half a lifetime's sailing experience, equipped with the latest navigation gear, up to their necks in charts, treatises and translations of the Robert Fagles), they followed his presumed route, rowing ashore for fun, fresh water and local research wherever he was supposed to have landed. For those who haven't been keeping score, the late Robert Fagles's translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey have been the most popular editions of both since they were published in the 1990s. This individual or bardic guild developed an amazing epic narrative poem in dactylic hexameter to recount in oral tradition, depicting the Trojan War (The Iliad) and Odysseus' convoluted return home from the war (The Odyssey). Setting out from Troy in Turkey, Like the Iliad, the Odyssey may have been written by Homer, who may or may not have been blind, or by a committee of poets. Recently, I have read the Robert Fagles free verse translation. I know that this topic has been brought up before, but i am still non the wiser on which translation of the odyssey i should go for. If you've never read the Iliad, it truly is one of the greatest works of literature. And that is the problem: Fagles is convinced he is a poet.
